When the calcium sulfite in the ball dissolves in water, a series of chemical reactions occur:

First, a small amount of calcium sulfite (CaSO₃) dissolves in water: CaSO₃ + H₂O → Ca²⁺ + SO₃²⁻.
Then, the dissolved sulfite ion (SO₃²⁻) reacts with the residual chlorine in water. For example, it reacts with the hypochlorite ion (ClO⁻) in water: SO₃²⁻ + ClO⁻ → Cl⁻ + SO₄²⁻. This reaction effectively removes the residual chlorine in water, including combined residual chlorine and free residual chlorine.
Excess sulfite ions can also react with oxygen in the air: 2SO₃²⁻ + O₂ → 2SO₄²⁻.
